For this year's Christmas letter,
I am posting what Makenzi wrote for school about her family traditions.
2011 has been a great year, and we pray God's blessings in your life in 2012!
Merry Christmas from the Meyer family!
My Family Holiday Traditions
Makenzi Meyer
December 2011
I love the Christmas season. I always feel so happy and feel so much joy when I see all the decorations and feel the cool breezes and signs of snow. I especially enjoy reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas: when Christ came to the earth as a baby
to save you and me.
to save you and me.
Starting soon after Thanksgiving my, my family decorates for Christmas. We turn the radio on to a Christmas station and decorate our tree. We have an artificial tree because it’s easier to take care of. My sisters and I also have mini-trees we put up in our rooms. I bought new ornaments for my tree that are light blue and silver, matching my room. We hang our stockings and decorate with snowmen and mistletoe. We set up all our beautiful nativity scenes with Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus. We have a beautiful little Christmas Village that we set up downstairs every year. We decorate the trees and our house outside with colorful lights.
Another exciting thing we do in December is Advent Calendars. On December 1st we start our 3 calendars. One of them, we have had for years. The other one my Nana sent this year. The last one is an e-card my aunt sent this year. It takes place in beautiful London. My two younger sisters and I switch off who gets to open each calendar each day. The calendar my Nana sent gives us interesting facts about George Washington. The one we’ve had for awhile has chocolate and part of scripture each day to tell the story of Jesus’ birth. The e-card calendar has a cute video or fun activity every day. The last countdown we do is the 12 days of Christmas. We have 12 special ornaments in a box under the tree, each one representing a character involved with the birth of Jesus. Each day, we take turns with who gets to tell that true story. Then, we get to choose one of the ornaments to put on the tree.
My family also has a few traditions on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. We always go to Christmas Eve service, most of the time at our church, Lighthouse. After church, we go to Olive garden and get food to go. Back at home, we eat it with a candle light dinner. After we finish, we open up one present. That present is always pajamas that we get to wear to bed that night. Most times we check the Santa Tracker online, just for fun, to see how long until he’ll be at our house. Christmas Day we open our stockings and all our presents. Then, we have a special breakfast, a lot of time cinnamon rolls.
I have many traditions during the Christmas Season. I enjoy all of them. I look forward to them every year. I love to learn more about Jesus’ birth. He was born to be the king of Kings, but was born in a stable and in that time it was more like a cave. He was placed in a feeding trough to sleep. It is amazing that what happened so long ago, still gets to be celebrated today.
